Description
A centrifugal extractor separates two immiscible liquid phases, such as an organic solvent and an aqueous solution, by combining intense mixing with centrifugal separation in a rotating chamber. The two liquids enter the rotor and are rapidly dispersed into fine droplets, creating a large interfacial area for fast mass transfer of the target solute. As the mixture moves outward under centrifugal force, the phases separate according to density: the heavier phase migrates toward the outer wall, while the lighter phase remains closer to the rotor axis. Internal weirs or phase outlets then direct each liquid into separate discharge streams. Because mixing and separation occur continuously in the same compact unit, centrifugal extractors provide high throughput, short residence time, low solvent inventory, and efficient liquid-liquid extraction.
